New name as we begin building a new community!

Building Hurricane-Ready, Affordable Homes in Brandon—Plus, a Big Name Change for Habitat

BRANDON, FL (July 23, 2025) – Habitat for Humanity is kicking off something big in Brandon: a new 23-home affordable community designed to give local families a safe, stable place to call home, with hurricane protections built in.

The new neighborhood, called Windhorst Commons, will help more parents put down roots, build equity, and keep their families safe during storms—tackling the urgent need for affordable housing in our region.

Thanks to support from Verizon, every home will be fortified with hurricane shutters. Verizon is also sponsoring a new Habitat home for Michelle Range and her family in the neighborhood. Her house, which was handicap-accessible for one of her two sons, was devastated in Hurricane Milton. The family lost nearly everything.

Hillsborough County Commissioner Gwen Myers joined the groundbreaking to show support for smart solutions to the affordable housing crisis across Tampa Bay.

Other sponsors of the new community include Hillsborough County, Publix Supermarkets CharitiesTampa Bay Buccaneers, South State Bank, Central Bank, American Momentum Bank, and Habitat for Humanity InternationalLeadership Tampa is building the community’s park, and law firm Carlton Fields’ sponsorship is the reason the street that will run through the cul-de-sac community will be named Justice Landing.

New Name, Bigger Mission

At the event, Habitat also unveiled its new name: Habitat for Humanity of Tampa Bay Hillsborough (formerly Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County), reflecting its growing impact across the region.
