Construction Underway on Habitat Home to be Built by 130+ Women

Over 130 Hillsborough County women are donning purple hard hats and swinging hammers as they come together for “Women Build” to construct a Habitat for Humanity home for a single mother and her four children. On Thursday, May 11th, future homeowner Candice Cowen will be on the construction site working alongside a team of volunteers from Women Build co-sponsor Skanska to help build the Tampa house for her children.

Women Build is co-sponsored by Skanska USA and TCM Bank and is the first women-themed construction event for Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County. In addition to providing sponsorship funding for Women Build, both Skanska and TCM Bank will have several staff members volunteer on the build site. More than 1,200 volunteer hours will have been invested in the Cowen home when Women Build completes all phases of construction.

“As a company focused on building better communities, Skanska USA applauds the work that Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build is doing to provide safer housing and better quality of life for families in the Hillsborough area,” said Debra Bauman, Vice President of Business Development at Skanska USA. “We’re joining this important effort on May 11 through our sponsorship and participation, as our Skanska women team members will be volunteering to build homes for women and children in need. We encourage others in our community to become part of this rewarding experience that is transforming many lives in Hillsborough County.”

Cowen, whose oldest daughter is a cancer survivor, has faced financial challenges providing adequate and safe housing for her children. “I’m so grateful to have been accepted into the Habitat program and have the chance to own a home of my own and a safe place to raise my kids,” said Cowen. “I’m also very excited to work alongside so many amazing women who want to help build my home.”

The Women Build construction site officially opened to volunteers April 22nd. Over the next month, 17 teams of women volunteers will be working on all phases of construction. Completion of the Women Build home is projected for early June.
